Illegal Discrimination on the Basis of
Sex & Harassment
The Fair Housing Act protects you from discrimination based on
your sex.
It is illegal for a seller, landlord, real estate agent, etc.
to decide where you can live based on your gender.
Sexual harassment is a criminal violation of federal and state
law. Sexual harassment can range from the landlord (or agent,
superintendent, maintenance worker, rental manager, etc.) making
sexual comments to actual physical assault.
It is a violation of the Fair Housing Act for a landlord to
ask for or require sexual favors in exchange for the rental
of an apartment, lease renewal, repairs, or any other condition
or privilege of renting.
The landlord cannot retaliate against you because you say “no”
or because you report him or her.
